Finding the Right Summer Camp for Your Child

Every summer is the same. Kids want to do fun things now that they’re out of school, and parents want their children to be happy, healthy, and out of their hair. Summer camps consistently fulfill the needs of both kids and their parents. From late June to mid-August, Camp Chateaugay near Merrill in northwestern New York state offers a splendid array of activities perfect for any young camper.

Camp Chateaugay is situated right next to the shores of Upper Chateaugay Lake’s narrows connecting it to Lower Chateaugay Lake. The camp prides itself on its lakeside location and the lack of roads separating the lovely lake from the camp’s facilities. The freshwater lake does not go any deeper than 10’ near the camp’s property, so the warm summer sun keeps the water above 77°F. This creates a perfect environment for boating in one of Camp Chateaugay’s many canoes, kayaks, rowboats, sailboats, ski boats, and windsurfing boards. Of course, campers can also simply go swimming at the waterfront.

Camp Chateaugay prides itself on its numerous athletic activities. Along with the aforementioned lake sports, the camp also includes a heated swimming pool perfect for lap swimming. The 32’ rock climbing wall houses eight different stations with varying degrees of difficulty, and the ropes courses allow for climbing, teamwork building, and zip lining. Soccer and baseball are quite popular at Camp Chateaugay with two fields each. You’ll also find a batting cage with pitching machine, a volleyball court, an outdoor basketball court, a lacrosse field, an archery zone, tennis courts, a mountain biking trail, a martial arts facility, and a kickball field. The camp’s gymnasium provides gymnastics lessons and allows for basketball, volleyball, roller hockey, and indoor climbing when the weather takes a turn for the worse. The camp also includes a netted driving range, and there are frequent trips to local golf courses for 9-hole games.

Campers with an affinity for animals and nature will find plenty to do here. Campers can explore the area’s various flora and fauna species at the nature building, and they can take lessons at the animal care station. If rabbits, lambs, and ducks are not adventurous enough for your campers, the camp’s stables house up to ten horses ready for riding the trails or jumping around in the ring. For the most adventure, however, campers can participate in one of the camp’s tripping programs, be it backpacking through the Adirondacks or canoeing to the Saranac Lakes.

The artistically-minded are certainly not left out at Camp Chateaugay. The arts and crafts center includes all of the summer camp stables from beading and tye-dye to sewing and macramé. You can also dabble in black-and-white photography, woodworking, ceramics, glassblowing, and even some cooking lessons. The performers in your family will love to know that the camp hosts a full dance studio and puts on two or three musical productions each summer.

Every evening, the camp hosts a different activity to get the camp together. Treasure hunts, barbeques, capture-the-flag, and campfires on the beach are just a sample. Sometimes, special days will call for special activities, such as July Fourth Day, Army Navy Day, and Gold Rush Day.

What’s activity without taking a breather every now and then? Camp Chateaugay’s Big House include a spacious living room area with books, board games, and a television. The dining hall provides plenty of nutritious and delicious options for the hungry camper. For a treat, the boat house includes the Aurora Borealis Creamery, a 1950s-style ice cream parlor with games and a jukebox. Of course, campers could just hang out in their cabins, especially since each cabin has a special “cabin night” each week to let cabin-mates build friendships.

Whether it’s for the full summer session or just one half of it, Camp Chateaugay provides plenty of fun, fulfilling, and memorable activities to keep your kids entertained throughout their entire stay.
